| The Best Horror Stories of the Year, 1989 (1990) An anthology of stories edited by Orson Scott Card and Martin H Greenberg |
Most of these stories are good examples of fear and suspense, or the unusual; a few substitute vulgarity for ingenuity, and one, Orson Scott Card's Lost Boys, is truly touching and haunting. Card's introduction to the collection, as well as his intercalary remarks, are brief and appropriate, and his extended addendum to his own story defines and enlarges it. All the readers are competent and workman-like, notably Nelson Runger, who reads four of the stories. In total, this is a set of well-presented tales of rather uneven quality.
