Fred Grove has won the Levi Strauss Golden Saddleman Award, Five Spur Awards from Western Writers of America, the Oklahoma Writing Award from the University of Oklahoma, and the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

When the War Between the States erupts, young Daniel Wade joins the Union militia, an act which estranges him from his father. Returning home on furlough after being wounded, Daniel finds his sweetheart, Laurel, gone and the area terrorized by a gang of renegades.
