Set in the 1930s, Mr and Mrs Ruggles have seven children who all had quite different ways of enjoying themselves. The children include Kate, who won a scholarship, Lily Rose, whose good deeds sometimes turned out badly and Jim, who became a member of the gang of the Black Hand.
