A year after doing his military service on the Namibian border, Patrick Winter, a young white South African, returns accompanied by his mother. They are visiting her lover Godfrey - a young black man and a member of SWAPO, the organisation from which Patrick had been defending the country. It is 1989, the year of Namibia's first free elections, and the country Patrick lost himself defending is being given away in a week.
