A chance meeting with an old schoolfriend takes a rather jaded and fed-up Kate Kinsella to Cornwall, where Helen is living with her fiance, Paul Warriner. Although madly in love with Paul, it seems that Helen is apprehensive about marrying him - not least because his former wife apparently killed herself and their two children. She is convinced that the house, Tamberlake, is haunted. Though deeply sceptical about psychic matters, and somewhat reluctant to get involved, Kate is nevertheless intrigued by the mysterious Warriner. With her landlord and sidekick Hubert Humberstone in tow - as well as the ever-faithful terrier Jasper - Kate starts to make some enquiries. Before long, she is up to her neck in another sinister and potentially very dangerous adventure...
