Orphan with Princess Complex Runs for Congress; Meets Election Campaign Consultant; Commits Suicide

Financial genius Isabelle Abbott was raised at a posh convent by Eglantine nuns now fallen on hard times. Isabelle has it all but is greedy for more. She wants to turn her life around, find a new path, and save her soul. If she gives her money to the poor and runs for Congress, she'll bring joy to the lives of others -- or so she believes.

She leaps into action, hiring a pollster and establishing headquarters in Massachusetts. To keep her tuned to the blue-collar district she hopes to represent, Isabelle calls in Susan Callisto, campaign consultant to the little guy. But before Susan can lift a finger, Isabelle commits suicide. Or was she murdered?

No one believes it was murder, not even Susan, who knows enough about her late client's poor health to accept the coroner's verdict. Only Sergeant Paul Tyre, the man Susan blames for the cracks in her relationship with Michael Benedict, remains unconvinced.

Without jurisdiction and facing fierce resistance from Isabelle's survivors, Tyre convinces Susan to help him investigate on the sly. ''Everyone who knew Isabelle had motive,'' Tyre insists, including even the birth parents she longed to identify.

The death of the rose that was Isabelle takes Susan up and down the Massachusetts coast. As she investigates, she uncovers truths that look like lies, grief that does not mourn, and the shadow of a pursuer who will stop at nothing to keep her in the dark.
