Jerry Gillespie, a Wiltshire farmer and amateur jockey, is hungry for work, so when trainer Laura Mundy - with whom Jerry was once in love - offers him a ride on Midnight Express in a big, amateur race, Jerry thanks his lucky stars that Laura considers bygones to be bygones.
