A novel by

Although the Napoleonic Wars were raging all over Europe Davinia Winter- ton lived a simple life in rural England, caring for her invalid father. Then Rupert Jardine came into her life, having been dreadfully injured on his way to London. It fell to Davinia to nurse him back to health, but as soon as he was well he was gone, although Davinia knew she would never forget him. Then, quite unexpectedly, months later, Davinia met him again, but to her amazement he was known by another name and was accompanied by his odious but utterly beautiful bride-to-be, Veronique du Plessis. On this occasion Davinia was not entranced by the handsome stranger. He seemed a different man to the one she had known before, seeking only pleasure, and disregarding all feelings except his own. However, before the end of the summer, Davinia was fated to see yet another side of his character, the dangerous one which almost brought disaster to them all, before she discovered the secret of her own heart and happiness at last.
