The raid on Zeebrugge is the climax of this thrilling and authentic novel, the second in Alexander Fullerton's series of novels featuring young sub-lieutenant Nick Everard. On St George's Day, 23 April 1918 the Royal Navy launched a desperate assault on the German base of Zeebrugge. In the sixty minutes from touchdown to withdrawal, eleven VCs were won and hundreds lay dead or wounded. Churchill said the raid 'may well rank as the finest feat of arms of the Great War'. Alexander Fullerton's descriptions of minelaying operations, coastal patrols in foul Channel weather and the savagery of clashes with enemy destroyers are heightened by his outstanding ability to recreate the war as it was felt and lived.
