The Big Drive

(1964)
A novel by

In the late 1860s following the Civil War, Texas was impoverished. No one had any money and business was at a standstill. No cattle had been sold for years, and ranges crawled with beef-on-the-hoof waiting for someone with the necessary guts and finances to get them to market.

Meanwhile, out-of-work ranch hands raised such a ruckus that the military police had been moved in to try to keep the peace.

One man, a Yankee, had the money -- and he believed in the future of Texas. But it was the Texans themselves who would have to show the spunk and determination to risk their big herds and their lives on a drive that could save them all from starvation. They must move 6,000 head of Texas cattle through a thousand miles of unknown territory.
