Manchester, 1926. Sixteen years old, strong willed and with a cloud of red-gold hair, Dasia Geenbow lives with her parents and older sisters in their large, dilapidated house. Working begrudgingly but resignedly in her family's pawn shop, she one day accidentally opens a letter addressed to her father - and discovers to her horror that her family is not all it seems. In a desperate bid for independence she runs away to her Aunt Dolly's boarding house, and finds work as a maid. But when a handsome young medical student, Hal Wrioth, asks for Dasia's hand in marriage, her fortunes seem to take a turn for the better - especially when she then gets a job on the Gloves counter of Bauldren's department store. But in the depths of the Depression, no one's job or future is secure, and although she can always turn to her irrepressible Aunt Dolly, Dasia must contend with hardship, pregnancy and the ever-present threat of the bailiffs. Still there are youth and determination on her side, and Dasia is determined some day to claim the mysterious legacy that is promised to her...
