After three days of riding across prairies, Johnnie Cameron was happy to smell the freshness of the north New Mexico mountains. As he and his horse, Blazer, stopped at a stream to refresh themselves, the burro pack that he had passed earlier approached, and the friendly elderly buckboard driver, Don Ygnacio, stopped to smoke and chat with Johnnie for a spell.
Shortly after Johnnie and Blazer were back on the trail to Santa Fe, he heard shots. From his vantage point beyond the canyon, he could see Don Ygnacio and the burro drivers with their hands up. It was clear that this was a planned ambush, and, guns ablaze, Johnnie intervened. In the hail of bullets, Blazer was shot.
