Dominic Barr has inherited Melbourne Hall, a title, and a mountain of debt. He realizes he will have to sell the state to avoid a debtor's prison. Although there is no love lost between them, Dominic's neighbor Kate is anxious to help. She recalls the legend of the Danish God, a treasure which was reported to have gone missing when the Danish invaders of King Knut overran Melbourne.
