First novelist Doss juxtaposes two extremes of southwestern life to create a dramatic and moving story that is much more than simply a murder mystery. At one end of the spectrum are the Native American Utes in Colorado, many of whom still follow the old ways. At the other are modern scientists working toward the physicists' current Holy Grail--"room temperature" fusion.
