It's thousands of years in the future, and Ellis Ayerst has left her husband, Melkorn, and daughter, Rikki, to join the Church of the Quest, a.k.a., the Seekers. What they're seeking is the physical location of God, and they've been helping themselves to galactic real estate in the process. When a Seeker ship sets up base camp on Davner, that planet's administrator, Melkorn, feels rightly threatened: that the ship's commandant is his ex-wife Ellis bodes ill for his tenure as leader. In fact, he resigns himself to being usurped by the politically powerful and wealthy church until Rikki is kidnapped by the Seekers, and he decides to fight back. While set plausibly enough in the 40th century, The Seekers has roots in our own.
