In the third in the Jewels of Kinfairlie trilogy, Delacroix tells the story of Alexander, Laird of Kinfairlie. Alexander has been laird only for a short time, and he feels woefully unsuited to the task. On Christmas Eve, his five resentful sisters come upon a strange woman in the chapel. The sisters decide to get back at Alexander for his high-handedness and convince Eleanor to stay and trick Alexander into marrying her. Twice widowed, she is reluctant to go along with the scheme until she meets Alexander and sees how good, kind, and well respected he is. So she dupes him into believing he's bedded her, and, of course, he does the right thing. And he is fascinated with Eleanor, believing that she is hiding quite a few secrets, some of which may be deadly. His continued trust in her in the face of growing suspicions eventually changes his fortunes forever. Delacroix provides an excellent end to a terrifically captivating series.
