During the winter of '74 in the Dakotas the army, desperate for men in the struggle to clear the plains of the Sioux, decided to use prisoners to fight. Murderers, thieves and renegades were returned to active duty and a company of them were sent to Sergeant Frank Coulter, at Fort Lincoln.
