Cook evokes New York's pungent atmosphere, complete with homeless people and all-night grocery stores, and makes Frank's profound loneliness palpable as he brings both cases--the nighttime one more convincingly--to satisfying conclusions. Clemons investigates the murder of a gypsy woman in what should be an open-and-shut case and at the same time, looks into the suspicious actions of a the young wife of an older, wealthy man. George Guidall's reading style is so powerful and riveting that the listener is literally forced to race for the next cassette. Accents, gender distinctions, emotional tones--all of these are mere playthings with which Guidall works his magic.
