Jared Walker found the love of his life at a church social during his senior year at Helena, Montana High School. He worked up his nerve and asked Rebecca Lowell if she would go with him to the church social with him. After the last dance he walked her home. A good night kiss and he was hooked. Unfortunately, his timing was terrible. In just three months, they would be going away to college.
Two different colleges.
She would be attending the University of Michigan Study law, while he would be going to Montana State University in Bozeman. The only time they would see each other would be the Christmas holidays and during the summer vacation. Fortunately, they both had telephones and talked at least once each week.
In February of Becky's third year of college, she was walking to class when the driver of a carriage had a fatal heart attack. His runaway carriage struck Becky, breaking both legs and one of her arms. Battered and bruised, she was in a coma in the university hospital, when her mother told Jared. He dropped his classes and caught the next train to Ann Arbor, along with her parents. He slept on the floor of her room for a week before she showed signs of emerging from the coma.
With no feeling in her legs, Becky was determined not to be a burden, and tried to drive him away.
