A First Doctor novel featuring Ben and Polly. Schirr aliens, led by the enigmatic figure of DeCaster, renegade subjects of the expanding Earth empire, are devotees of the mysterious Morphiean Dark Arts. Through their appropriation of the ancient magics they are bringing the vengeance of the Morpheian empire down on Earth. The Earth Frontier Elite Corps Special Unit are the best, which is a good thing. On the final leg of their training they are sent to a vast asteroid riddled with labyrinthine tunnels. To fully appreciate their successes and mistakes they 'wear the web', as experiential visors allow each member of the squad to experience the others' perspectives. But what if this is no training exercise after all? As the apparently lifeless bodies of DeCaster and other Schirr turn up on the asteroid and members of the Corps are picked off one by one, the Special Unit has to consider whether they were brought here to fulfil an alien purpose.
