The main character is the ruler of what once was America in the 25th century. The society has become rigid and he is as bored and frustrated as his subjects. He diverts himself with a Dimensional Computer that dredges up objects from other times for him. A short circuit destroys it one day but not before bring back a young couple from the 20th century. The couple become separated and the ruler sets his eye on the woman. Nonetheless, the 20th century man tries to find her again through a completely automated society in which everyone is numbered.
