In St Paul, Minnesota, 1939, the body of a beautiful dime-a-dance girl is found murdered and abandoned on a hillside. The chief suspect is Herbert White, an eccentric recluse and amateur photographer, who spends all his time recording his life in detailed diaries and scrap books.
