Keiren is a bit of a dreamer. He longs for his own dog. When Jack Ellis arrives to stay at his mother's boarding house, Keiren bonds with him immediately, listening to Jack's tales of four stories centering around dogs. When Jack Ellis moves on, Keiren is thrilled to find in his place a dog he calls Tommy. Mystery develops when a teacher shows Keiren an old ten-dollar note. He recognises the face of Henry Lawson on the note to be that of his friend, Jack Ellis!
