Val’s journey for answers combines with the annual gathering of the clans. While the clan elders may have a solution to restore Water’s blessing, Val worries that Shona may sacrifice herself and accept banishment on her behalf. Unwilling to let that happen, she must consider the unthinkable.

In need of answers…

“I know the rules of the Mer. Don’t have contact with humans. Keep our secrets. Don’t turn against your brothers and sisters.”
“I know! That’s what is puzzling me. What in the world could be bad enough that Water would warn us, send the shark to scare us, but not truly harm anyone? Even the Clan House wasn’t too hard to fix. We broke the biggest rule! What could be worse?”
What could be worse? “No one’s hurt anyone, right? Even what we did didn’t hurt a human or a Mer. We saved a life. If God and Water are the same, or at least somehow divinely related, wouldn’t you think they’d both approve? One race saving the other?”

A journey to the gathering of clans, looking for help from one of the ancients, but accidents and attacks happen along the way.

Praying for help…

“Water wrapped safe around me. We know you bestow ever, blessings innumerable, beyond eternity. Will and I are here. We are beyond eternity. We have innumerable blessings, and you ever bestow them. Even when things are going wrong, all of us are still together. Still safe. Can you help us find out what’s wrong? Can you help us fix it?”
“We’re sorry for breaking the rules of Mer. You broke the laws of life and death. Transformations. Resurrections? Maybe you could give us a pass?” Will’s whisper filled the space where mine ended.
“Amen,” we said as one.
My skin suddenly stung like something red hot had landed on it. In the distance, I heard a hoarse shout. I gasped and my hands and head jerked away from Will’s, pain stabbing me with red-hot needles.

A gathering of clans. A gathering of suspects…

We crept to the cave-like entrance and were confronted by three figures, all looking troubled. Was it a coincidence that I prayed for an answer, and three of our “suspects” were now standing in front of us?
