Her brother Gary forms a friendship with Danny Kane, based on their mutual love of music, but it leads to conflict with his mother and eventually with Danny. As the summer months pass, Lorraine loses her shyness and becomes friendly with one of the most popular girls in the Square, Joanne Tully, but that friendship is also threatened when both girls fall in love with Danny.
