Javier Calvo was born in Barcelona. He is a literary critic for El País and a translator. Among others, he has translated Ezra Pound, W H Auden, Ted Hughes, Patrick McGrath and David Foster Wallace.

He is married to New York writer and photographer Mara Faye Lethem. They have a daughter born in 2007, Judit Laia.
