Elizabeth Spann Craig grew up in Anderson, SC, where she spent most of her childhood in the county library, staggering out with books by the armful and writing her own stories at home. Elizabeth attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC and spent her junior year studying abroad in London. There she wrote articles for Nine to Five magazine. After graduation and marriage, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where she wrote, modeled and sold ads for a local arts magazine.
