Set during the Norman Conquests, Ailith has a child by the already married Rolf. When his wife Arlette returns, Ailith and Julitta flee to London. After her mother's death, Julitta returns to Rolf at Ulverton and falls in love with Benedict, despite Arlette's attempts to stop the relationship.
