When Dr Shefford dies, financial disaster threatens his children: twenty-one year old Ann, her sister Myra, and the twins. Then, just when it seems that the family will have to split up, a way out appears. Sir John Melton, the handsome, young politician, had been looked after by Dr Shefford following a car crash. Now he proposes marriage to Ann: a marriage that could keep the children together, but a marriage that would be without love for Ann. Persuaded, she accepts. But difficulties and sadness lie ahead before she finally realises how blind she has been. Happiness had been staring her in the face all the time.
