It is 1910. Grace Ellis' family is struggling in rural poverty in a small town in Lancashire but manages to live well enough. Then one evening Dora, her mother leaves her husband, Arthur, incapacitated from a stroke, and Grace, to fend for themselves. Grace has to suddenly grow up and look after her parents' shop. But after her mother's ruthless action, the family disintegrates and Grace is reduced to the penury her parents worked so desperately to escape. They are unable to pay the rent and soon loses the shop.

But Grace has inherited her mother's strength and determination and at fifteen she goes out to work to bring home some money to look after her father. Despite the overwhelming odds, she manages to start her own cosmetic business yet prejudice, lack of money and inexperience continue to beset her fledging business as she fights to keep the business going.

Somebody is watching over her, however. The anonymous benefactor who had years ago arranged to fund Grace's education, now extends his philanthropy to build her business. She meets Daniel, heir to the Goodman fortune and The Lockgate, one of the finest house in the country, and they both fall deeply in love. His controlling mother does everything in her power to break them up but Daniel is killed in the war before they can marry, leaving Grace pregnant with their child. She keeps the child and through sheer tenacity and courage, her cosmetic business flourishes, to the exclusion of her own happiness.

Yet there are still some truths to be revealed and Grace must call upon every ounce of strength in her redoubtable character to triumph over scheming adversaries and opportunistic lovers to find a man whom she can love once again.
