Shundersen and his childhood best friend Divincola have been sold into slavery as punishment for an idiotic crime, where we find out what one man will do to another in a bid to escape justice, and what another man will do in search of another kind of justice when his trust has been betrayed. As Shundersen says, "We tried to hate each other, me blaming him for all the jealous mischief he’d caused, to our eventual ruin, he insisting I’d brought it all on myself, and eventually on him. But we both needed an ally... and each was all the other one had."
