On a remote tea-plantation in India, the servants are preparing a birthday celebration for their mistress, Julia Clockhouse. Outside the monsoon uproots trees while Julia, alone in the drawing room, is drinking pink gin and is tense with longing for the return of her estranged husband, Ben.
