Christie Heron joins the Duke of Gloucester's household to improve his status, but falls foul of friends and family by doing so. When the king dies, the Duke triumphs and Christie rises with him, but he soon becomes disenchanted after witnessing treason, rebellion and suffering and faces a difficult decision.
