The Last Superhero

(2010)
A novel by

Jas is a grade seven boy who is putting all his energy into completing the artwork for an adventure comic he hopes will be his ticket into an elite summer art program. But when he meets up with Wren, an eccentric, crusading grade seven girl, his efforts are derailed. Wren is a person of values. When she sees things that are wrong, she sets out to correct them. She is driven by two causes: avenging the victims of school bullies and saving a local heritage firehouse from demolition. Eventually, she becomes the target of the bullies, and because of Jas s inadvertent interference, they also turn their attention to him, attacking him at his core. They destroy his comic and his chances of getting into art school. The topics explored aren t new, but are valuable nonetheless, and the author has applied a unique twist to them.
