Joel Grant is a former South African terrorist who is recuperating in England after black South African rebels freed him from prisonan experience that has left him a physical and mental wreck. Consequently, when he is kidnapped by the South African secret police, his friends are thoroughly confused. What would the South African government want with a man they have rendered harmless? Finding the answer to that question leads the reader from Lancashire to Pretoria in this exciting thriller. Bannister (Striving with Gods writes with a sure hand, rarely overplaying the violence and seldom opting for simple solutions. All sides in this battle are fairly drawn, with an understanding that leaves the reader no stereotypes on whom to pin the blame. Casting wider implications than its setting, the book is an inquiry into the nature of terrorism and the limitations of political asylum. Tautly written, and deftly plotted, it is a novel of quality, one that will leave the reader breathless.
