While Mexican literary critic Alejandro longs for his estranged and, he suspects, unfaithful wife, Mercedes, Bonnie, the daughter of Mercedes's lover, witnesses a sequence of calamitous events, and an American industrialist and his wife deal with an unscrupulous art collector.
