Fay Browne is a middle-aged solicitor living with her family in the small village of Renham. One fateful night Fay witnesses a woman's apparent suicide in front of a train and becomes deeply involved with the inquest, convinced that the woman didn't jump but was in fact pushed. Her antique-dealer husband, Robert, leaves for the States, ostensibly on business with his secretary, Meg. When Meg is then killed in a car crash soon after, and is later found to have been pregnant, Fay begins to suspect her husband for the first time in their marriage, while also beginning to doubt her own sanity. Fay takes it upon herself to begin investigating two further deaths, now convinced of a connection between them and determined to prove her absent husband's innocence.
