Inspector Laurence Erskine's girlfriend, Judy, is attending an art club when a murder occurs. Another murder takes place during the club's course held near Bath. Judy suspects both deaths can't be politically motivated, and enlists the help of the irascible Yorkshireman Ralph Arnott, her old boss.
