On 1 January 1940, Grace Topp gives birth to two boys. Peter is brought up by the well-to-do Ernest Marshwood and his wife as their own son. The other boy, Eddie, is cared for by Grace's family. As they grow up the two boys come to know each other - but they are certainly not friends.
